Lesson No 29

  1. Which family does Hadrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) belong to?

Ans. He belongs to the family of Quraish. This family was the noblest of all Arab families. The members of the Quraish family were acknowledged as leaders of all others. Again, Bani-Hashim was one of the clans of the Quraish. It was the most respectable of all others. The Prophet (peace be upon him) comes of this clan. That is why he is also called a Hashimi (Hashimite).

  1. Who was Hashim whose seed is known after him?

Ans. He was the great grandfather of Hadrat Muhammad (peace be upon him). His parental ancestry runs thus: Hadrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) s/o 'Abdullah s/o, 'Abdul-Mut-talib s/o Hashim s/o 'Abd-i-Munaf.

  1. Are there any prophets other than Hadrat Adam (peace be upon him) among the ancestors of Hadrat Muhammad (peace be upon him)?

Ans. Yes, he is among the descendents of Hadrat isma'il s/o Hadrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Besides these two, his forefathers include Hadrat Nuh, Hadrat Idris and Hadrat Shith (peace be upon him).

  1. At what age was Hadrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) invested with prophethood?

Ans. He was forty years of age when he received the first revelation.

  1. What does revelation (Wahy) mean?

Ans. Revelation means that Allah began to reveal His commands and words to Hadrat Muhammad (peace be upon him).

  1. How long did Hadrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) remain alive after the first revelation to him?

Ans. He lived for twenty-three years after the first revelation. Thirteen years he spent in the holy city of Mecca and the rest ten years in the hallowed city of Medina.

  1. Why did he shift to the hallowed city of Medina?

Ans. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) preached monotheism to the inhabitants of the holy city of Mecca and exhorted them to give up idolatry and believe in One Allah the Almighty, all of them became his bitter enemies because they worshipped the idols. They began to tease and torture him in all possible ways. Hadrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) continued to preach the unity of Allah, convey His commands to them, braving all sorts of atrocities. But when their hostility exceeded all limits and they conspired to take his life even, he left his beloved home under Allah's command and migrated to the hallowed city of Medina. The people of Medina had already embraced Islam. They were anxiously waiting for the arrival of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). When the Holy Prophet reached Medina, the Muslims there helped him and his companions with their life, their money and property. Getting to know of the migration of the Prophet to Medina, other Muslims who were subjected to torture at the hands of the unbelievers also gradually migrated to Medina one after the other. This migration of the holy Prophet is known as Hijrah (hegira). The Muslims who migrated to the hallowed city of Medina leaving their hearths and homes in the holy city of Mecca are known as Muhajirs (emigrants). Those in Medina who helped the Holy Prophet and the migrated Muslims are known as Ansars (helpers).

  1. What was the opinion of the Arabs about the Prophet before he declared his prophethood?

Ans. All the people believed him to be extremely truthful, pious and trustworthy. They called him Muhammad, the Trustworthy (Amin), which means that he was quite dependable and truthful for them. All the people respected and honoured him immensely.
