I’D
Prayer
I’d
comes from AUD, meaning to return, and FITR means breaking fast. I’DUL
FITR means the festival of breaking fast after Ramadhan. I’DUL
AZHA means the festival of sacrifices which occurs on the day following
the Hajj. Islam has got no festivals except these two, which are celebrated
with a view to demonstrate happiness after the performance of duties
like fasting and Hajj. They teach that there is real happiness in the
performance of religious duties. There are also practical examples of
Islamic brotherhood in which all men, irrespective of caste and creed,
should join these prayers.
How
to perform it
The preparation for I’d is similar to the preparation for the
Friday service. One must do everything possible to appear neat and tidy.
The gathering in the I’d should preferably be in an open place,
but if necessary, a Mosque may also be used for holding the Divine service.
It is best to recite as many times as possible the following Takbirs,
while going to and returning from the I’d services:-
ALLAHU AKBER, ALLAHU AKBER, LA ELAHA ILLA-LLAHU WALLAHU AKBER ALLAHU
AKBER WA LILLAH IL HAMD.
No Adhan is called out for the I’d namaz, nor an iqama for the
arranging of the lines. The I’d service consists only of the two
rak’ats in congregation. To begin the prayers one must first make
niyyat as follow:
“FACING TOWARDS KA’BA, BEHIND THE IMAM I PRAY TWO RAK’AT
OF I’D-UL-ADZAH (OR I’D-UL-FITR) WAJIB SIX TAKBIRS.”
After that when the Imam calls out Allahu Akbar, while reciting with
him Allahu Akbar in your mind, raise both hands as far as the ears,
touching them AND FOLD both arms as in the daily prayers. Then recite
Sana. After this the Imam will utter Allahu Akbar TWO times, one after
the other. Each time while reciting Allahu Akber in your mind raise
both hands to the ears and then LEAVE THEM IN THE NATURAL POSITION.
Again the Imam will utter Allahu Akber for the THIRD TIME. This time
raise the hands to the ears while reciting Allahu Akber in your mind
and then have the arms FOLDED as usual. After this the first rak’at
is finished exactly in the same manner in which the daily prayer is
offered.
When standing for the second rak’at at AGAIN HAVE YOUR ARMS FOLDED.
After the recital of Sura Fatiha plus another Sura, the Imam will call
out Allahu Akber THREE TIMES, one after the other. Each time while reciting
Allahu Akber in your mind raise both hands to the ears and then LEAVE
THEM IN THE NATURAL POSITION. REMEMBER when the fourth time Allahu Akber
is uttered then while reciting Allahu Akber in your mind go straight
in the ruku WITHOUT lifting the hands. The rest follows as in the daily
prayers.
Sermon
For Hanafi school of thought after the Eid prayer, listening to the
two Khutbas is Wajib. During this period worldly talk, work or recital
of any sort is prohibited, and one must listen to the sermon very attentively.
If any person happens to miss the Eid prayers, for him alone the Kaza
is not Wajib. But in the case of more than two persons the congregational
prayer and the two sermons are Wajib.
